Application Advantages of Large Diameter HDPE Pipes

Most HDPE pipes are made from polyethylene (PE) resin PE4710. PE4710 is an ASTM standard that indicates, in order, base resin density, slow crack growth rate, and hydrostatic design stress.

PE4710 has a Level 3 density element, a Level 7 slow crack growth element, and a maximum hydrostatic design stress (1,000 psi) of 73°F water. PE 100-RC has a high resistance to slow crack growth, and the pipe will not crack when the stress is less than its tensile strength, allowing the PE pipe to be used with other installation materials except sandy conditions to simplify the installation process.

These pipes are also resistant to chemical attack by strong oxidants used to disinfect drinking water, and laboratory reports indicate that HDPE pipes made of PE100-RC resin can last for more than 100 years under most water quality conditions. HDPE pipes are flexible, which allows the pipes to eliminate localized overstresses through slight deformation.

Conventional pipe systems on the market are susceptible to leaks, which adds cost to many water companies. Using the large diameter pipe, installers can effectively fuse-welded pipe and fittings. HDPE pipe has been studied to have the lowest leakage costs of all other large-diameter pipe alternatives.

Large-Diameter HDPE Pipes for Water Supply Mains

In addition to the general advantages of HDPE pipes, the foreign WRF report investigated existing water companies using large-diameter pipes. Most utility companies surveyed were satisfied with the durability and reliability of HDPE pipes. The 5% who were dissatisfied expressed concerns about knocks, repairs, joints, and penetration. These concerns stem from misunderstandings about large-diameter pipes.

Some users have concerns about the performance of large-diameter pipes under surge conditions. The report conducted specialized testing to verify the performance of large-diameter HDPE pipes under recurring surge conditions. The PE pipe has been successfully tested 2 million times with cycle pressures between 125 psi and 188 psi, with no failures after six months of continuous testing. Additionally, the pipe was tested for 50,000 cycles at pressures from 125 psi to 250 psi with no failures.
